As a pastor for almost three decades, I have been able to interact with many believers on the subject of giving. Here are some common questions;
How much should I give? My short answer is always: "More!" 2 Corinthians 8:7 says we should grow in giving, just like we grow in faith, love and many other virtues. 2 Corinthians 9:8 tells us that God's unlimited grace abounds to us to enable us to give. So, we can and should always grow in some way in our giving.
Should I tithe? While 10% is not mandated in the New Testament, the emphasis is on the power of grace. Of course, grace always accomplishes more than the requirement of law. So, for the believer that understands the power of grace, tithing should be a floor, but not a ceiling.
Where should I give? I believe the biblical pattern clearly says that the Lord has ordained the local church as his means of communicating the gospel. In the early church believers brought their gifts to the local church leaders. My practice has been to give at least a tithe to my local church, then give over-and-above to other ministries that I believe in.
What ministries should I consider? This requires prayer and wisdom from the Holy Spirit as there are so many options and appeals that come our way. Here are some suggestions:
Follow your heart burdens. It is God who works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure (Phil. 2:13. What ministry passions are you sensing from the Lord?
Give to ministries you trust. Impact is good. Integrity is vital. Make sure you trust the character of the ministry leader and that the ministry operates with accountability for their finances, lifestyle and ministry focus.
Be strategic. Not all ministries are created equal. Ask the Lord what focus is closest to His heart and most aligned with His word. For me, I am convinced that spiritual revival is the single greatest need in our nation -- and that it sparks powerful personal, family and cultural transformation. That is why I am giving my life, and my money, to this cause. What is your cause? Make it a priority in your giving.
